Adoption is a story about love. For a mother, it is not about genetics; it is about the love she has for a child. For a child, it is all about the love a family can give them. Many children have been adopted. I am one of those children who has been adopted.
My name is Emili. I grew up in Southwest Missouri with an older brother and an older sister. I am the baby of the family. My brother is 20 years older than me, and my sister is 18 years older. When I tell people that, they begin to wonder. They ask the question “Were you a surprise?” The answer to that question is no. I am adopted. When I say that, they immediately ask me if I would share my story, and of course I always do. I am proud to be adopted. If I hadn’t been adopted, I might not be here to tell this story.
On a cold December day in 1994, a couple and their two children were headed home from church. Instead of going out to eat as they usually did on Sundays after church, they decided to eat lunch at home. As soon as they got home, they received a phone call. On the other end, a social worker with Children and Family Division Services informed them that there was a beautiful 10-day-old baby girl who needed a family. They, of course, said, “Yes, we will take her.” Soon they arrived at the hospital to pick her up and take her home. As soon as they saw this beautiful little girl, they knew right then that they wanted to adopt her. Her name was Kristen, but they changed it. That beautiful little girl was me. All of the workers in CDS knew that I was going to stay where I was at, so they decided to find homes for other children. When I was 3 years old, I officially became Emili Noelle. Since that time, I have had so many experiences and opportunities that I probably wouldn’t have had if I had not been adopted. I’ve traveled the world, graduated from college, and much more. I have to say, being adopted is pretty awesome. I wouldn’t trade it for anything because my parents have provided me with a multitude of opportunities to help me achieve my dreams.
Adoption is a true story of love. Adoption provides children with loving parents who strive to support them in achieving their dreams. Adoption allows children to grow up healthy. For a child who is adopted, adoption is wonderful.
